Spirit of Champions 2012

On Thursday, April 12, more than 400 people were present at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum to celebrate the ninth inductee to the Putnam City Foundation Wall of Fame, Steve Largent.
Largent graduated from Putnam City High School in 1972. Although he admittedly was not a dedicated student, he spoke about the significant impact of his high school football coach, Jerry Potter, and baseball coach, Larry Guerkink. They became like family in high school, and he worked hard to please them. Those efforts paid off. After graduating from the University of Tulsa with a degree in biology, Largent was drafted as a wide receiver for the Houston Oilers in the 1976 draft. He was later traded to an expansion team, the Seattle Seahawks. Largent proved to be a great “catch” for Seattle, and helped put the new Seahawks team on the football map.
When Largent retired from Seattle 14 years later, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
On Jan. 4, 1995, he was sworn in as a member of the 104th Congress as the newly elected U.S. Representative from Oklahoma’s First Congressional District. 1995 proved to be a very good year for Largent. His election to Congress and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, both in the same year, were testimony to his hard work, character, and commitment. Those same qualities led him to success in his current position as President and CEO for the U.S. wireless industry’s largest trade association, CTIA-The Wireless Association.
As Largent said in his Wall of Fame acceptance speech, the accomplishment for which he is the proudest is that of “family man.” Married for 37 years to his high school sweetheart, he and Terry have four children and six grandchildren. “I have never loved anyone more in my life than I do my wife, and she, in return, loves me more than anyone ever has,” he said.
Steve Largent is not only the first Putnam City District graduate in a professional sports Hall of Fame, he is also the only District graduate who has served in the U.S. Congress. His portrait is proudly displayed in the Putnam City administration building with portraits of past recipients: Leo Mayfield (former Putnam City Superintendent), Kenneth Cooper (leader of the international physical fitness movement and inventor of aerobics), Neil Woodward III (former astronaut), Carlan Yates (orthopedic surgeon), Rhonda Roby (forensic scientist), Mick Cornett (mayor of Oklahoma City), James Marsden (actor), and Bryan White (musician).
Congratulations to Steve Largent, 1972 graduate of Putnam City High School and 2012 Putnam City Foundation Wall of Fame honoree.

LemonAid for Learning

Students in eight Putnam City 5th-grade classes will each have an iPad to use in class next year thanks to a gift from Larry and Suzy Lemon to the Putnam City Schools Foundation.

Lemon originally planned to donate funds to equip one 5th-grade classroom with iPads. To determine which classroom it would be, the Foundation launched the “LemonAid for Learning Project,” inviting 5th-grade teachers to submit proposals about how they would use iPads to enhance student learning.

Eight teachers submitted proposals, each detailing ways and apps for iPads to help students learn. The proposals were specific, thorough and creative, covering exactly how iPads would be used to build skills and knowledge in reading, writing, math, social studies, science, music and more. Teachers explained in their proposals how iPads would be used to tailor lessons to individual students, how students would use iPads to learn and practice research and presentation skills, and how students would be engaged by the technology.

The proposals were shared the Lemons as well as with district specialists. Larry recalls that he had already secretly decided to fund two proposals, and then began reading them to choose the best ones.

“My plan was to read through the proposals and put them in three stacks. One stack would be the winners, another stack would be for maybe and the third stack would be ones we wouldn’t fund right now but might in the future. The thing is, every proposal I read went into the winner stack. In the end, Suzy and I decided to go ahead and fund them all and really make a difference,” Larry says.

Two weeks after submitting their proposals, teachers came to a meeting expecting to hear which one of them would receive iPads for their classrooms next year. When it was announced that all of them would receive an iPad set, teachers were thrilled and thankful.

“I was overcome with joy after hearing that I was receiving an iPad classroom next year. I am so grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Lemon’s contribution to our district, which paved the way for this opportunity. Not only am I grateful, I’m very eager to get started creating lessons and projects that will make best use of the iPads,” says Kerry Rice, a 5th-grade teacher at Wiley Post Elementary School.

Debbie Shirley, a 5th-grade teacher at Windsor Hills Elementary School, had similar feelings.

“I was overwhelmed by the generosity of Larry and Suzy Lemon and so excited to know my students and I will receive a class set of iPads. I’m looking forward to collaborating with other teachers in our district, reviewing apps and leaning more about the iPad so that I will be better prepared to use them. We’re living in a digital age, and having iPads in my classroom will give every student access to technology and help prepare them to be ready for college and careers,” says Shirley.

Research on the value of iPads in education is still in early stages. Studies so far indicate that iPads make courses more interesting, encourage exploration of additional topics and increase learning.

Julia Tiller, a 5th-grade teacher at Ralph Downs Elementary School, says iPad use and the resulting benefits only make sense.

“My students are digital natives. It’s a language they speak very fluently. This gift will allow me to create a digital classroom where my students are using technology as a vehicle for learning,” Tiller says.

Cory Boggs, director of Information Technology for the district, agrees with Tiller that the gift of iPads to eight 5th-grade classrooms is meaningful.

“This gift is a game-changer for these classrooms. Where we have iPads now, we’ve seen an undeniable effect on learning. What was once a flat textbook with fixed photos and plain paper has been transformed into an interactive, living resource that links to a world of information. iPads have a unique way of engaging students and making learning truly 21st Century,” says Boggs.

Making an impact in learning is exactly what Larry and Suzy Lemon have in mind.

“Suzy and I have been very fortunate in life. We believe that because we’ve been successful, we have a responsibility to help the next generation be successful, too. We want to create opportunities for students that they might not otherwise have and use our resources to make a difference in classrooms,” Larry says.

Bethany Lorenz Named Putnam City District Teacher of the Year

Bethany Lorenz, a biology teacher at Putnam City North, was selected as the Putnam City District Teacher of the Year at a reception hosted by the Putnam City Foundation held at NewChurch Tuesday evening, March 13th. She was selected from the five Excellent Educators recognized at the Teacher of the Year reception. Priscilla Cude, president of the Putnam City Foundation, congratulated the Excellent Educators and told those in attendance to read about their accomplishments on our website.

Bethany Lorenz has an impressive "can-do" attitude and willingness to work for the common good. An active seeker of continuing education opportunities, she has developed into an exceptional classroom teacher. Her National Board certification is a reflection of her drive for excellence and self-improvement. But in many ways, her contribution to the profession is moving beyond her classroom, her school, and this district. She is in demand as a featured workshop presenter to events and the list of her leadership involvement is extensive and is growing. She was an integral member of OK science PASS revision, and her contribution to the profession is evident through her position on the Board of Directors of OK Science Teachers Association. Her professional growth and dedication to the teaching profession is inspirational, and those fortunate to work with her are very proud of her.

Janie Bowden-when a person follows their calling there is greatness. Janie Bowden's calling is to be an educator. Whether a colleague is in need of an early morning cup of coffee and a cheerful greeting, or a student and their family making the trasition to middle school special education classes, Janie welcomes all to her classroom. As a Special Olympic coach, her fund-raising efforts allow her students to compete on the local and state levels. Her influence is far reaching as she mentors entry level teachers, those endeavoring to become NBCTs, and scores alternative assessments for the OSE. Special thanks to Lois Tipton, her teaching assistant, and to her children: Christia, David and Meagan.

Jodie Martin is a fantastic third grade teacher. She works hard in everything she does. She puts in extra effort to meet the needs of all her students. She makes sure every student feels loved, honored and valued. Jodie has taught third grade at Dennis Elementary for six years. She seeks out new best practices to make sure she is knowledgeable and able to help her students achieve all they can. Jodie is a team player, shares freely, and always has student success as her top priority. She can be counted on to teach students or other teachers. We are proud to have Jodie represent Dennis Elementary!

Kristi McMullin grew up the second of four sisters in Kingfisher, Oklahoma and graduated from Kingfisher High School. She attended Southern Nazarene University on track and basketball scholarships. Kristi coaches girls basketball and track at Capps Middle School. She is described as active, personable, driven, organized, creative, responsible, and hard working. One colleague said that when Kristi started teaching, she "hit the ground running." Another described her as "amazing." Kristi believes relationships are the key to education. Students may forget what you teach, but they will never forget the relationships you have built with them and the impact you have on their lives.

Brad Schatzel is a passionate teacher. He has worked in education since graduating with a history degree from the University of Oregon in 2002. Immediately after college, Brad and his new wife Lauren moved to Long Beach, California. Here he spent two years working as a paraprofessional at Hill Classical Middle School and one year as a substitute teacher at the Community Day School. The young couple then took a six month sabbatical to tour western Europe's museums, castles and streets. This trip stoked Brad's enthusiasm for history. In 2006, he was hired to teach social studies at Putnam City West High School. During Brad's tenure at West, he earned a Master's Degree in business and, along with his wife, welcomed three children: Benjamin, Desmond, and Genevieve, who was born in December.

Shera Steinhoff Recognized as

Oklahoma City Council and Rotary Club 29

Teacher of the Month

Pictured (l to r):  Caroline Gist (PC Foundation), Chuck Wiggin (President, Rotary, Club 29), Shera Steinhoff, Ashley Hoggatt (James L. Dennis), John Lunn (Will Rogers Elementary)

Shera Steinhoff, teacher of the gifted and talented programs at Will Rogers and James L. Dennis Elementary Schools, was honored as the February Teacher of the Month for the Oklahoma City Council/Rotary Club 29.  Mrs. Steinhoff has known she wanted to become a teacher since she was a little girl, following in the footsteps of her father and maternal grandmother.  She uses her knowledge of children and instructional practices to go above and beyond in presenting interactive, motivating lessons.  She creates a safe, positive environment where students know they are loved, respected, and successful.  She believes that students learn best when the learning is hands-on.  Students can then direct their own learning.  When learning the difference in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks during a geology unit, her students receive a rock collecting case and become "rock hounds."  They weigh, measure, and test their rocks.

Her technological skills are applied with her students as she instructs them in the creation of PowerPoint presentations on states, presidents, and student autobiographies.  Her students use digital cameras and apply that knowledge as they participate in scavenger hunts locating geometric shapes that are found in their everyday world.

Mrs. Steinhoff cares about her students unconditionally, which maximizes their potential.  They literally blossom under her tutelage.  She believes in them.  Teaching is her passion and a habit of the heart.

Mrs. Steinhoff received a proclamation from Mayor Mick Cornett at the Oklahoma City Council Meeting as well as recognition at the Rotary, Club 29 Luncheon at the Petroleum Club on Tuesday, February 28.

The Putnam City Foundation congratulates Shera Steinhoff on this worthy recognition.

Public schools often lack resources for students to thrive.  Teachers are spending $1 billion from their own pockets each year on supplies.  DonorsChoose.org makes it easy for any individual to address this inequity, one classroom at a time.
