Author Visits Program 2006-2007
The Putnam City Foundation hosted 11 authors for 32 presentations
during the 06/07 school year as part of its Author Visits Program.
Peggy
Perry Anderson, from Owasso, OK, visited Hilldale, Coronado and Central
Elementary Schools with presentations about her books, "Let's Clean
Up", "Time for Bed the Babysitter Said", and "To the Tub". 267 books
were given to deserving students at all 3 schools.
Michael
Korenblit from Edmond, OK went to Capps and Western Oaks Middle Schools
to share the true and amazing story of his parents' survival of the
Holocaust. 89 students were lucky recipients of autographed copies of
his book, titled "Until We Meet Again".
Bill and Carol Wallace,
from Chickasha, OK visited Coronado, Ralph Downs, Will Rogers,
Hilldale, Western Oaks, Rollingwood, Northridge, James L. Dennis, and
Windsor Hills Elementary Schools. They gave out over 1400 books with
popular titles such as "A Dog Called Kitty", "The Meanest Hound
Around", "Bub, Snow and the Burly Bear Scare", and "Coyote Autumn",
among others, to some very excited elementary students.
Mike
Wimmer, an artist from Norman, OK visited PC Academy as well as Harvest
Hills and Overholser Elementary Schools to show his artwork and give
out 240 books ". Mike is also known for his artwork of "Mr. Clean" Man
and has been commissioned by Disney to do several art pieces.
Tammi
Sauer from Edmond, OK gave a high energy presentation, involving
audience participation to explain how an idea becomes a book at Central
and Hilldale Elementary Schools and Central Intermediate. She disbursed
114 of her books titled "Cowboy Camp" to winning students whose names
were called out at the conclusion of her presentation.
Richard
Trout, from Oklahoma City, visited Capps and Hefner Middle Schools and
gave out 64 of his books with titles, "Elephant Tears", "Cayman Gold",
"Falcon of Abydos" and "Czar of Alaska".
Linda Ayers, from
Van, TX went to D.D. Kirkland for an all day presentation and gave out
78 books titled, "The Time Bridge Travelers", "There's Something in My
Sandwich", "Tiger Goes Collecting" and "Tiger Does the Write Thing"
among others.
Priscilla Cummings, from Annapolis, Maryland,
visited Hefner, Cooper, and Mayfield Middle Schools to speak about her
nationally recognized book, "The Red Kayak" and "A Face First".
Priscilla autographed and disbursed 43 of her Sequoyah Young Readers
Award winning books to excited students at the 3 middle schools.
Lynn
Moroney, from OKC, did a day long presentation at Lake Park Elementary
and gave out 62 of her books titled, "Baby Rattlesnake".
The
goal of the Author Visits Program is to improve academic achievement by
increasing students' interest in reading and writing. With the generous
grant contributions from Inasmuch and Sarkeys Foundation, the Putnam
City Foundation hosted 11 authors for 32 presentations and gave over
2500 books to students in Putnam City who have been identified as among
those who would particularly benefit from receiving a book to keep as
their own.
