School Site Grants 2006/2007
Approximately $20,000 is being distributed to ten Putnam City schools
to increase student achievement and enhance educational offerings,
thanks to grants awarded by the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation.
Each year, the Foundation awards grants to help schools meet goals in
the district's comprehensive local education plan and the No Child Left
Behind Act. Schools receiving Foundation grants are Capps, Cooper,
Mayfield and Western Oaks Middle Schools, Putnam City West High School,
James L. Dennis Elementary, Lake Park Elementary, Windsor Hills
Elementary, Hefner Middle School and Harvest Hills Elementary.

Changes and Challenges
$8,000.00
Over
3,000 students grades six through eight will be affected through the
Lions-Quest "Skills for Adolescence" positive youth development and
prevention program. It contains multi-disciplinary activities that
teach essential life skills, and will influence the students' growth
and character development.
Putnam City West High School

EOI-Evaluating Objectives Instantly
$4,000.00
Putnam
City West will purchase four Classroom Performance Systems, which are
wireless response systems that communicate between handheld student
"clickers" and the teachers' receiver units. These systems will allow
the teachers to instantly see whether or not the students comprehend
the concept being taught.
James L. Dennis Elementary School
Grant Writers: Randy Utt and Shera Steinhoff
"Exploring" the Possibilities
$1,324.42
This
grant will allow for James L. Dennis Elementary to purchase Red Brick
Learning and National Geographic books which focus on explorers and
Native Americans. Third, fourth and fifth grade students will improve
in reading fluency and increase vocabulary in the content areas of
math, science and social studies.
Lake Park Elementary School

"I'll Be in My Office"

Students
at Lake Park Elementary in grades preK-5 will be introduced to an
"office" filled with models of good writing, graphic organizers, and
materials that will stimulate their creativity. They will be taught how
to comprehend non-fiction text at an earlier age, as it is typically
not introduced to students until late elementary and beyond.
Windsor Hills Elementary

Reading is SWELL
$3,000.00
Windsor
Hills Elementary School will develop a family resource room with
computer programs, books, and books-on-tape to limited-English speaking
families and students. ELL (English Language Learner) teachers will
host parent-student "breakfast" meetings in the resource room to guide
the students and parents through the programs, answer questions, and
demonstrate materials. The families will also be allowed to check out
materials to take home and practice new words.
Hefner Middle School

Staying Fit Adaptive Style
$1,800.00
Hefner
Middle School will purchase adaptive physical education equipment for
special education students. Regular education students will be
assisting, allowing them the opportunity to grow and develop mentally
and physically alongside the special needs children.
Harvest Hills Elementary School

Writing All the Live Long Day
$425.00
Teachers
from Harvest Hills Elementary will attend a three hour training session
presented by dynamic teacher, Audra Plummer. During her training, she
will provide group instruction, give examples and explain procedures
for incorporating writing into the existing curriculum for grades K-5.
Participants will be introduced to various writing activities using
literature, free writing, journals, and word hunts.
